Description from GoodReads: “Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.”

Let’s just start by saying: Doubtless, Stephen King has a touch of the shine to him!  I hadn’t read this book since high school, so it was fun to revisit this classic Stephen King!  He is the King for a reason, friends.  Seriously, he is an amazing writer – in case ya’ll didn’t already know!

Jack Torrance is an alcoholic.  His drinking almost cost him his family and his temper lost him his job at Stovington Prep.  As a favor, his old drinking buddy lands him a job caretaking The Overlook Hotel in its off-season.  Perfect!  Now, aspiring writer Jack can finish his play – maybe start a novel!  He can spend some much-needed time with his wife and son!  But his 5-year-old son Danny isn’t so sure.

”Sometimes human places create inhuman monsters…”

Even if you have seen the movie, this book is worth reading.  To me, Stephen King’s true talent is not to frighten us with the horrors of ghosts and monsters and gore, but to frighten us with the darkness of the human mind.  King stood a far way off and beckoned to me and I followed him and crawled right into the dark abyss that was Jack Torrance’s mind.

King’s writing is so honest, raw, real… Did I mention that I love him?  Amazing!  He’s amazing!  But back to the point.  King was an alcoholic at one point himself and I’ve heard that the writing of this book was part of his recovery.  The emotions are so authentic – Jack’s struggle and the effect on his family… The reason why King is so amazing is his characters – they are real, I swear. And their problems, their feelings, their thoughts – always spot on.

You need this book if you haven’t read it.  You need every Stephen King book.
