GoodReads Description: "Five women reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking along a muddy track.
Only four come out on the other side.
The hike through the rugged Giralang Ranges is meant to take the office colleagues out of their air-conditioned comfort zone and encourage teamwork and resilience. At least, that's what the corporate retreat website advertises.
Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk has a keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing hiker, Alice Russell. Because Alice knew secrets, about the company she worked for and the people she worked with.
The four returning women tell Falk a tale of fear, violence and fractured trust during their days in the remote Australian bushland. And as Falk delves into the disappearance of Alice, he begins to suspect some dangers ran far deeper than anyone knew."
The Dry is one of my favorite books and I had such high hopes for this one! And it was just OK. Don't you hate that?
Lots of people loved this book, so maybe since I didn't get approved for it back when it came out and I've waited so. long. to read it I built up my excitement too much!
I liked parts of the book and overall the story was interesting. However, I was more interested in the small tangents or possibilities of who could have done it, than I was by how it actually turned out! The parts where the women were lost in the woods dragged. And there was just a lot going on that mostly turned out to have nothing to do with the main mystery.
Characters were just OK too. I hated Alice, like you were supposed to. I don't think I connected with any of them, though.
Overall, I'm just nonplussed and it was just an OK book from an author that had wow-ed me so much with The Dry. Hopefully The Lost Man by Jane Harper is better - I have it on hold at the library also...
MY RATING:
Characters: 3
Story: 3
Overall: 3 stars
