MY REVIEW:
5 Classical stars!!
Charles Dickens for children! I am absolutely in love with this idea! One of my favorite movies as a child was Oliver! (My mom wouldn't let me watch the last half of it, but I was blissfully unaware of this fact throughout my childhood, until I read the book). And I also loved Muppet Christmas Carol (still do!). So I feel like Charles Dickens was a big part of my childhood - albeit in movie form! So I love the idea of other children feeling attached to Dickens at a younger age!
This collection of Dickens' most famous works is great for children of many ages! I feel like it has great read aloud potential! It is exactly the type of book my mom would have read to me at bedtime, when longer stories are sometimes better!
There are a lot of good lessons about caring for those less fortunate, etc. in Dickens stories as well. He was the voice of the oppressed in his day!
This author also did a children's book of Shakespeare which I find fascinating! I haven't read that one but here it is:
The illustrations are fantastic as well! They are adorable - and informative! I absolutely loved the "Cast of Characters" for each story and the timeline of Charles Dickens and the glossary in the back!!
5 classical stars!
- There are a wealth of movies you could watch - but I recommend A Muppet Christmas Carol and Oliver! the Musical (up to your discretion and the age of your child whether or not you cut it off halfway through like my mom, lol).
- Service projects! Depending on which story we are looking at a service project may be an appropriate response. Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes would be great for A Christmas Carol. Sponsoring a World Vision child and writing him/her a letter! Blessing bags or other types of donations depending on what you have and your skill set for homeless/Salvation Army. (For example, I had a friend that crocheted scarves to donate to Salvation Army during the winter for the homeless they house). Any other child-appropriate service projects?
- There are a wealth of Christmas projects to do if you read A Christmas Carol at Christmas time, head over to Pinterest!
- Put on a play, acting out one of the stories!
- Make a fancy English dinner (use fancy plates and glassware, maybe dress up in old style clothes if you have some dress-up clothes? Or anything you could use to that effect).
