First Line Friday: The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton

First Line Fridays hosted by Hoarding Books

Happy First Line Friday!  Head on over to Hoarding Books and join in the link up!

I am currently reading The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton.  Turton is also the author of The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle - which I loved!  See the review, here.  First line:

The Devil and the Dark Water

"Arent Hayes howled in pain as a rock slammed into his massive back."

GoodReads Description: "The breathtaking new novel from Stuart Turton, author of the The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, winner of the Costa Best First Novel Award.

A murder on the high seas. A detective duo. A demon who may or may not exist.

It's 1634 and Samuel Pipps, the world's greatest detective, is being transported to Amsterdam to be executed for a crime he may, or may not, have committed. Traveling with him is his loyal bodyguard, Arent Hayes, who is determined to prove his friend innocent.

But no sooner are they out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage. A twice-dead leper stalks the decks. Strange symbols appear on the sails. Livestock is slaughtered.

And then three passengers are marked for death, including Samuel.

Could a demon be responsible for their misfortunes?

With Pipps imprisoned, only Arent can solve a mystery that connects every passenger onboard. A mystery that stretches back into their past and now threatens to sink the ship, killing everybody on board."

So, what do you think? Have any of you read The Devil and the Dark Water? Or The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle? I would love to see what you are reading! Share in the comments below.

  1. No I haven’t read any of those but they look intriguing!

My first lines are from MINUTES TO DIE by Susan Sleeman:
    Chapter 1
Exposed. Kiley felt exposed. Standing there. In the dark. Waiting. Waiting.

  2. Happy Friday! I haven't read anything by that author.

Today, I'm sharing the first lines from Wedded to War by Jocelyn Green. "When Charlotte and Alice told their mother they were taking the omnibus down Broadway, they weren't lying. They just didn't tell her where they would be getting off."

I'm currently reading A Life Once Dreamed by Rachel Fordham. I'm on chapter seven so I'll share the first line from there:
"Sam Landon made his way over to the schoolhouse, toolbox in one hand, lunch tin in the other."
I hope you have an excellent weekend! 🙂❤📚
