This book, published in 1979, is considered the first sci-fi book by an African American woman.  And I'm loving it!  The first lines...

"I lost an arm on my last trip home. My left arm.

After saving a drowning white boy there, she finds herself staring into the barrel of a shotgun and is transported back to the present just in time to save her life. During numerous such time-defying episodes with the same young man, she realizes the challenge she’s been given..."

Today on my blog I shared the first line from Misty Beller's Love's Mountain Quest. "The woman stood in the wind, skirts billowing, hair flying, as though the gusts swept away all her inhibitions." I just finished it and it was really good!
