Ten Books I Abandoned (or SHOULD HAVE) & What to Read Instead

This week's Top Ten Tuesday @ That Artsy Reader Girl (which I'm totally late for) is the last 10 books I DNF'ed.  I don't start a lot of books I cannot finish, so I've finished most of these.  I usually try to push through, so here's:
10 Books I Abandoned (or SHOULD HAVE) & What Books to Read Instead!

1. Snakes and Ladders by Victoria Selman - the main character was supposed to be brilliant and yet she made the stupidest decisions based on emotion, obsessing over male character... nope and nope. Read instead: Truth & Lies by Caroline Mitchell (also a series)

2. Save Me From Dangerous Men by S.A. Lelchuk - unrealistic, unrelatable main character.  Looking for a strong female protagonist?  Read instead: If I Had Two Lives by A.B. Whelan. Looking for a PI? Read instead: The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling)

3. Nine by Zach Hines - probably just because YA isn't always my thing. Looking for dystopian YA? Read instead: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins or Divergent by Veronica Roth

4. Caraval by Stephanie Garber - Unpopular opinion! But again, I tried and failed with YA.  I swear sometimes I really love it! Looking for a worthwhile fantasy dream world? Read instead: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5. Sister of Mine by Laurie Petrou - I hated the people in this book and story was slow.  This one I finished, but not sure it was worth the time.  Looking for family drama? Read instead: The Sister in Law by Sue Watson or After All I've Done by Mina Hardy

6. The Paragon Hotel by Lindsey Faye - A lot of people like this one, but for me her right and wrong was too black and white and too modern.  Characters in that time period would have struggled more with beliefs against the norm.  Looking for historical fiction mixed with murder mystery? Read instead: Dreamland by Nancy Bilyeau

7.  The Firm by John Grisham - I finished this book and I absolutely hated it! I've never read another book by this man and have no plans to. Bestseller?? What? Nope.  Looking for a legal drama? Read instead: Defending Jacob by William Landay

8. Under My Skin by Lisa Unger - I love unreliable narrators, but this one was too unreliable. Looking for an unreliable narrator? Read instead: Secret Window, Secret Garden by Stephen King (a favorite of mine!!)

9. Cross Her Heart by Sara Pinborough - I just remember the characters were weird and the story... Not my thing. Wondering what the hype is about for Pinborough? Read instead: Behind her Eyes by Sara Pinborough

10. Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris - finished this, the ending was ridiculous.  Looking for crazy revenge seeking women? Read instead: An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sara Pekkanen

  1. I like the twist you put on this theme - recommending a "better" book than the ones you abandoned. Nice! Here's my TTT list.

  3. I like your recommendations to read instead, and the whole 'should have DNF-ed' thing also. I used to hate to DNF, but now it is a necessity. I love Grisham though! At least, his 90s stuff. I haven't read anything in the last twenty years. The Firm is okay, but The Client and A Time to Kill remain his best works in my opinion. I have heard quite a bit about Defending Jacob, this may be the push I need to finally give it a try!

  4. Thanks, Sarah. The infidelity in The Firm irked me and the justification. Defending Jacob is like a combination legal drama and psychological thriller and it's pretty awesome, you should definitely read it :)
